How do I pack items for Amazon FBA?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerPack items securely to prevent damage, following Amazon's FBA requirements: use boxes or poly bags, include suffocation warnings if needed, and label each item with an FNSKU. Boxes must be sturdy, not exceed 25 inches on any side unless oversize, and be sealed with tape. Ship to the assigned fulfillment center with proper shipping labels.

Follow Amazon's Packaging Guidelines

Amazon requires each unit to have an FNSKU label, either on the item itself or on its poly bag. Items that could be mistaken for a set must be marked 'sold separately.' Poly bags must be transparent, at least 1.5 mil thick, and have a suffocation warning if the opening is 5 inches or larger.

For boxed items, use a single box per unit unless it's a multi-pack. Do not use boxes that are too large; Amazon may charge fees or reject shipments. Seal boxes with pressure-sensitive tape, not masking or duct tape.

Prepare Shipments Correctly

Create a shipment plan in Seller Central, then pack multiple units into a master carton. Each master carton should not exceed 50 lbs unless it contains one item over 50 lbs. Label the outside with the shipment ID and box content labels.

You can ship via Amazon Partnered Carrier (UPS) for discounted rates, or use your own carrier. Ensure boxes are not damaged and do not exceed 25 inches on any side unless the item itself is larger.

  • Apply FNSKU labels to each unit.
  • Use poly bags for loose items with suffocation warning.
  • Seal boxes with clear packing tape.
  • Print and attach shipment and box labels.
  • Do not include price tags or other retail stickers.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to remove or cover retail price tags, which can confuse Amazon.
  • Using weak tape or overfilling boxes, causing them to burst in transit.
  • Not including suffocation warnings on poly bags, leading to rejected shipments.
